Splitting receipts

How do I split a receipt?

On Home, tap Scan or add a receipt. Take a photo, choose one from your photos, or type the items in. Pick who was there, then assign items or leave them for friends to claim.

The scan got something wrong. Can I fix it?

Yes. Every item name and price can be edited before you save, and you can add or remove items. If IOU wasn't sure about something, like a blurry total or a handwritten tip, it shows a "Double-check before saving" note.

How are tax and tip split?

By default, in proportion to what each person had: if you had a third of the food, you pay a third of the tax and tip. You can switch to splitting them evenly instead. Everything adds up exactly to the receipt total, to the cent.

What if we only have a total, not items?

Choose Just a total, like "$80 of drinks". People tap "I'm in" and the total is split between everyone who's in.

Claiming

What does "Needs claiming" mean?

Nobody has claimed that item yet. It stays flagged on the receipt and at the top of the event until someone does, and totals only count what's been claimed so far.

I claimed the wrong item. How do I undo it?

Open the receipt and tap the item again to unclaim it.

Two of us shared something. What do we do?

Both of you claim it. IOU splits that item evenly between everyone who claimed it.

Events and friends

What's an event?

An event holds every receipt from a trip, a weekend or a big night. IOU keeps a running total for each person and shows the fewest payments that settle everyone up.

How do I invite friends?

Open the event and tap Invite. Send the link from Messages or any app. When your friend taps it, they sign in with their phone number and pick their name.

My friend isn't on IOU yet. Can I still add them?

Yes. Add them by name, or with their number from Contacts, and assign their items. When they sign up with that number, they're connected automatically to every event you added them to.

How do people actually pay each other back?

IOU tells everyone who owes whom and how much. The payment itself happens outside IOU, in Venmo, Cash App, Apple Cash or however your group usually pays.

Your account

I'm not getting the sign-in text.

Check the number, wait a minute, and tap resend. Codes can take a little longer on some carriers. If it still doesn't arrive, email us with the last four digits of your number and we'll look into it.

How do I change my name?

On Home, tap your picture, then Account, and edit your name. It updates in every event you're in.

How do I delete my account?

On Home, tap your picture, then Account, then Delete account. This deletes your account and the events you created. See the Privacy Policy for exactly what's removed.
